Department of Surgery

Our Department of Surgery was incepted at Koyana Hospital in 2017. Since then it is running under the supervision of well-qualified and prominent surgeons.

With the modernisation of the hospital, the addition of sophisticated laboratory facilities, and state-of-the-art imaging services round the clock, the department has grown leaps and bounds. Today, it’s recognised as a modern and dependable centre for emergency and routine surgical work. It is now known as a referral centre and caters to patients from Islampur and around.

All types of major and very complicated procedures are carried out regularly in our operation theatres equipped with modern operative instruments and anesthesia machines. It includes all types of abdominal surgery like major organ resections, laparoscopic minimally invasive procedures like cholecystectomies, hernias, appendicectomies, resections, cancer surgery including head and neck surgery, breast surgery, anorectal procedures with the use of staples, and major trauma and emergency work. The operation theatres are looked after 24/7 by dedicated and highly trained staff.

Laparoscopic or “minimally invasive” surgery is a specialized technique for performing surgery. It is also known as keyhole or band-aid surgery due to the size of the surgical incisions. In the past, this technique was commonly used for gynaecologic surgery and for gall bladder surgery.

In traditional “open” surgery the surgeon uses a single incision to enter into the abdomen. Laparoscopic surgery uses several 0.5-1cm incisions. Each incision is called a “port.” At each port, a tubular instrument known as a trocar is inserted. Specialized instruments and a special camera known as a laparoscope are passed through the trocars during the procedure.
